Description |
Created in 2010 as the first installation of the Tacoma Murals Project, the Portland Avenue Community Center restroom building is decorated with a brightly colored, imaginative mural. Youth artists, mentored by five lead artists, painted four distinct scenes on the structure. On the front and side, three bird-headed children sit on a background of white and purple. On the back, children in animal suits play with fantastical animals such as flying turtles in a scene that wraps around the building. The word "Welcome" is written in different languages including English, Samoan, and Chinese, representing the multi-cultural nature of the neighborhood. The remaining quadrant features a robot dance party in bold colors. The mural is the result of a combined arts initiative between Metro Parks and the City of Tacoma. The lead artists were Rachel Dotson, Jeremy Gregory, Joni Joachims, Kelda Martensen, and Chris Sharp. |
