Inside the Tacoma Nature Center at Snake Lake, visitors are welcomed by displays of pond life and marsh creatures as well as wildlife-themed artwork. Several wood carvings give the space a warmth and character that appeal to nature-lovers of all ages. Just to the side of the welcome counter rests "Frogs and Beaver," a carving from renowned Tacoma artist Jim Smith, donated circa 1993. The smooth wooden piece bears the shape of a beaver swimming, disappearing off the edge of the piece, with an otter swimming and frogs off to the side. The work melds with the side of the welcome desk, as if emerging from the depths. Master Carver Jim Smith passed away in 2005, but he left an indelible mark on the local arts community. The African American artist grew up on the East Coast, showing pieces in New York as a young man, before moving to Tacoma. Before he opened his own carving studio at Defiance Hardware, Smith taught wood carving for 30 years at Fort Lewis, Steilacoom, and Clover Park schools. After his retirement, he continued to mentor new carvers from his own workshop. He was a member of the Pierce County Arts Commission, and today the Commission gives the Jim Smith Award to local artists and groups that help promote cultural understanding and bridge gaps between communities. |
