Description |
An original 1911 watercolor drawing from the architectural firm Hare & Hare hangs framed in the headquarters building of Metro Parks Tacoma. Hare & Hare developed the first design plan for Point Defiance Park, and although its recommendations were not followed to the letter, the design principles continue to influence the park's design today. This large artwork was a supplement to the full report, which today sits in the archives of the Northwest Room of the Tacoma Public Library. The painting depicts trails and viewpoints, along with some specific landscape features at the entrance to the park. Tacoma park planning in the early years was primarily left up to park designers. Edward Otto Schwagerl and Ebenezer R. Roberts worked on the development of Point Defiance between 1890 and 1908. In 1911, the Metropolitan Park District hired the noted landscape architectural firm of Hare & Hare, of Kansas City, Missouri. Hare & Hare was comprised of Sidney J. Hare and his son, S. Herbert Hare. Surviving documentation suggests that the father, Sidney, did most of the work at Point Defiance, and spent two weeks in March 1911 hiking around the park, taking measurements and photographs. The results of his survey went into the final report, along with many of the photographs. |
