Description |
The Coast Guard acquired the land known as Browns Point in 1901 and built the first permanent lighthouse in 1903. Maritime safety at the Point had been a concern for many years, and a warning light was hung on a pole starting in 1887. The 1903 lighthouse was replaced in the 1930s, but the 1½-story frame Keeper's Cottage built at the same time was preserved as a home and museum. The interior includes a living/dining room, music room, kitchen, bathroom, and three bedrooms. The furnishings date from 1903 to 1933. The basement has been arranged as a museum of household items from the early 20th century. Today, the Points Northeast Historical Society offers educational programs on the history of Browns Point lighthouse, based on information from detailed logs kept by the early keepers who lived in the home and took care of the lighthouse. For example, vacationers renting the cottage can participate in the program "A Light Keeper's Tour of Duty." The entire property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, noting in particular the Keeper's Cottage and the Lighthouse itself. Other structures include a 1905 boathouse, 1906 oil house, and crew's quarters from the 1950s. The original lighthouse was replaced in 1933 by a concrete structure, and continues to be operated by the Coast Guard. |
